Pan de Zacatlan: the best bakery to try these cheese-filled delights

Zacatlán, Puebla, is famous for its apples and its delicious bakery, which is almost always filled with cottage cheese. The best place to find it in the city is Pan de Zacatlán, in Los Reyes.

Zacatlán is one of the most popular municipalities in Puebla. In Mexico City we know it for two things: its exquisite apples and its cheese bread. We have few places where we can find a cheese bread that can compare to the original Puebla, but perhaps its best representative is the Pan de Zacatlán bakery , located on Pacific Avenue, almost next to the CFE.

The bakery in Zacatlan is quite small and traditional. Upon entering, the first thing you notice is the good and vast variety of bread. Then there are three windows decorated with brick red curtains -from which, at night, you can see a stand of delicious-smelling esquites- and a long counter where they serve you nicely.

The cheese bread of Zacatlan is filled with cottage cheese ( which is not really cheese, but a dairy product obtained from whey) soft and slightly salty, which contrasts perfectly with the sweetness of the breads. Among the variety of breads here are the blackberry and cheese stuffed wallets, the cubiletes, the cuernitos (with cheese, of course), the gusanos, the cinnamon rolls, the donuts, and even cakes. However, of everything they sell, there are 3 things we particularly like:

1. The cheese-stuffed shells, first and foremost, because they never fail. We recommend putting them in the oven for half a minute so that their sweet and simple coating -no butter around here- is golden brown and just right.

2. Secondly, the apple pie filled with juicy and authentic Zacatlan apples, and balances the crunchiness of its texture with the softness and sweetness of its filling.

3. Last but not least, the bisquets with cheese, which, although we know they are the most traditional, we love them precisely for that reason. These soft and golden bread rolls are filled with cheese, so in each bite you get a great mix of flavor and texture.

The rosca de reyes that they prepare at Pan de Zacatlan is one of the most special ones out there. We highly recommend ordering soon because everyone wants them (!)
