Sanitizing our spaces, food and ourselves is already part of our daily routine and will remain so in 2022. However, cleaning supplies contribute to leaving a considerable footprint on the environment, and we wonder if there is a more planet-friendly alternative. So, taking advantage of the fact that citrus fruits are in their best season, at LOCAL we share with you a tutorial on a natural citrus disinfectant and degreaser that meets our ecological needs.

Oranges, tangerines, grapefruits, limes and lemons are unequivocal sources of vitamin C -among many other mineral goodness- in addition to activating the immune system, protecting the digestive system and regulating cholesterol and uric acid levels in the blood. But the virtues of these gifts of nature do not end there, since they can be used as a powerful natural degreaser and, therefore, biodegradable.

This tutorial will teach you how to make an effective 1 liter potion with citrus peel that helps to eliminate bacteria, bad odors and stains, as well as fight tartar. The mixture does not rot and when sprayed, the vinegary scent does not linger for more than a few seconds, with only the citrus scent prevailing.

Ingredients:

Peels of 3 grapefruits, 4 tangerines, 4 lemons
700 ml white vinegar
300 ml water
1 liter container for maceration
Strainer
Atomizer

Step 1

Peel and preserve the peels of oranges, tangerines (taking advantage of the season), grapefruit, lemons, or limes. You can make a combination or choose just one, as long as the jar is full. You can even freeze them for later use.

Step 2

Without crushing them, add them to a bowl.

Step 3

Pour three parts of vinegar to the container (700 ml) and top up with water to cover (300 ml).

Step 4

Macerate the mixture for 48 hours. Once the time has passed, you will notice that the vinegar has taken on the color of the peels, as it has extracted all its citric acid.

Step 5

Strain the mixture and introduce it into a sprinkler.

Extra

The remaining macerated peels can be used as compost. Nothing goes to waste here.
