Tacos Domingo and the nostalgia of the North

Very close to downtown Mexico City, Tacos Domingo makes its appearance amidst loud corridos and lots and lots of charcoal. The smoke, although it usually faces Carlos Pacheco Street, also gets on the diners' clothes. But that's not a complaint at all. Tacos Domingo is a great place to eat tacos in corn tortilla, flour or Arabic style, with or without cheese, asada, steak or ribs. And, of course, enjoy the north from the center of the city.

Their menu, although simple, does not envy the big taquerias in the city. We started with some prepared onions -in an almost red sauce that tasted good, as all red sauces should-; we also ordered a clamato with lots of ice and a beer; then, we ordered two flour tortilla taquitos: a cutlet with cheese and a rib; after that, we ordered a bean doradito and added a martajada sauce that also tasted good. Although they are not yet on the menu, there are also beef or chicken burritos.

Not satisfied, we ventured out for another taco in flour tortilla with asada and cheese: a delicacy. In addition, we could not leave without trying the crepa Domingo: a kind of crepe made with flour tortilla, cajeta and melted glorias, we wisely accompanied it with a scoop of coconut ice cream. We found everything exceptional, perhaps because we are addicted to tacos that are not afraid of smoke or spicy sauces.

While we were at one of the steel tables, we listened attentively to those corridos that perhaps also sound in some corner of Nuevo León, Durango, or maybe Sinaloa. We thought about the fact that there is still no other place in the city that can connect us in this way with the northern part of the country where we live; that is why Tacos Domingo is a success, whose branding in shades of yellow and gold also attracts the most skeptical of novelties.

Sunday Guide: where are the best tacos in Mexico City?

The question kills us all, without exception. Friendships have been broken and armies have been won just because of the willingness to safeguard a taqueria with one's own body. This impulse was the same one felt by Nico Meehan and Alberto Rassam, who together with writer and creative Pedro Reyes, came up with an incredible book titled Guía Domingo -which can be purchased on site- in which they share a list of the best taquerias in Mexico City.

But the CDMX is not the only territory with delicacies, cities like Guadajalara and Tijuana are also emerging as true gastronomic centers. For this reason, there are also editions of the Domingo Guide dedicated to these places and all the possibilities they offer. Of course, in Domingo there are also caps and t-shirts for those who want to take something home from the taqueria.

There are no better people to create a taqueria than those who have already traveled the entire taqueria territory and have learned something from their journey. Tacos Domingo is the result of that effort and it shows in every dish you order.
