Voortus, the sunrise between two volcanoes and the connection with nature

Voortus are outdoor experiences that combine low-impact hiking with glamping while providing environmental awareness.

Voortus is a city-based project that provides premium outdoor experiences in order to create awareness of the nature that surrounds us and give us a break from the chaos of the city. One of these fantastic mini-trips is to witness the sunrise between two volcanoes: Iztaccihuatl and Popocatepetl.

Created by architect Pablo Marquez and in partnership with Andrea Garcia, the name Voortus is a play on Latin words meaning "volcano" and "sunrise/rising/sunrise." Voortus was born as a project in response to the lack of demand for pandemic work in June 2020: "A while ago Andy and I found this place to watch the sunrise, because climbing the nearby peaks was something we did as a hobby, and it was a secret we had kept," explains Pablo.

In just two years, Voortus has grown from being something reserved for sharing with friends, to structuring it as an experience that involves other creative and gastronomic companies to make it a complete and affordable adventure.

This first route with which he was born is the "Sunrise in the Paso de Cortés", where you start leaving at 4 am in the Roma Nte, to finish at 4 pm and back in the CDMX. At more than 3,600 meters above sea level, El Paso de Cortés is located between Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, entering through the National Park, and although the place would make you believe that it is far away from our daily life, it is only an hour and a half away.

During the hike, the Voortus team (usually comprised of two certified guides) provides those who sign up for the hike with lamps, raincoats, hot drinks, and a vegan/vegetarian brunch created by Sobremesa. The low-impact hike through the nature reserve ends at the springs on the slopes of Iztaccihuatl.

"We seek to be the link between those who can't imagine making a journey of this type, offering them a guide, and informing them about the impact we have on the ecosystems that surround us and that we visit. We want to sow the seed that they should be preserved," says Andrea.

Voortus has more than 5 routes, and is a low-impact style of hiking combined with glamping that makes it easy for anyone to join.

"An important focus of Voortus is to know a lot about the site and train our guides to be able to express the importance of the mountains. We want to take away the idea that these places are only for mountaineers and bring people closer to them so that they get to know them and want to start taking care of them," explains Pablo.
