The taco, tortas or juice stands that line the sidewalks of the CDMX are an important part of the city's landscape, gradually becoming a recognized and appreciated space by the people who live nearby or by those who cross paths with them every day. Cafe Tormenta, a tin stand on the corner of Mérida and Puebla, is part of the Em, Martínez and 686 Bar family run by chef Lucho Martínez, and has quickly become a meeting point for coffee lovers and passersby in the area.
When we arrived there were several people at the bar and others on some benches in the shade while Thelonious Monk music was blaring from the speakers. We approached the bar and were able to chat with Giovanni Villeda, the bar manager who created the drinks menu. This time we tried one of his specialties, the rosita latte. I must admit that we thought it was a latte with some kind of pink coloring, but we were surprised because it is nothing like that: it is composed of an infusion of rosita cocoa, coffee and milk -we were recommended to try it with oat milk. With this drink Giovanni sought to recreate the taste of a mocha without the fat of the chocolate by using the cocoa flower and, in our opinion, he succeeded in creating a very special drink with a very smooth taste.
Another special drink is the oleo in its two varieties, with cold brew or matcha. In this case, the oleo, a citrus extraction prepared here, is mixed with tonic water and the drink of your choice, resulting in a very fresh and light drink. Unfortunately, we arrived when the oleo was finished, but we'll certainly be back to try it. The menu also features a small variety of bread -they are not always the same- and a sandwich with smoked ham, gruyère cheese and dijon mustard.
Café Tormenta also seeks to become a space of collaboration for the guild and currently has one with Makana Thai cuisine restaurant, so for a month, if you visit them in the evenings you can try a delicious bánh mì.
Café Tormenta is located on the corner of Puebla and Mérida in the Roma neighborhood and you can visit them from Wednesday to Saturday from 8 am to 6 pm.
